Talc is the softest known mineral, scoring only 1 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Usually found in masses, it will only crystallise very rarely into transparent crystals. Soapstone is mostly comprised of Talc, which is why it is used so commonly for carvings as it is easy to work.
