Ocean Jasper

Ocean Jasper has an orbicular pattern, and is found only in two deposits in Madagascar. In fact it is now thought to actually be a chalcedony rather than a Jasper despite its name. Although thought to be a very new find, it has in fact been mined since 1999, and originally documented in the 1920s and again more officially in a French Mineral Encyclopedia in 1977. The two deposits of Ocean Jasper in Northwestern Madagascar are about 10 miles apart. The first is near Marovato, and is known for the multicoloured and druzy material it produced. The second deposit is near Kambaby, and produces mainly green and yellow opaque material. It shouldn't be confused with Kambaba Jasper, which although also from Madagascar, is found much further inland. The first deposit has been effectively exhausted today, but the second one continues to be mined. It can be found in a huge range of colours, from yellows, pinks and red, through to purples and blues, and more earthly colour such as greens, browns and whites.
