Description

This lovely Ammonite has been replaced by Pyrite, giving it an unusual black and gold colour. The fossil has been sliced to reveal the internal structure, and polished to make it smooth. You will receive the exact fossil pair in the photo.

Pyritization of fossils is relatively rare, as it occurs when Iron and Sulphur (the component elements of Pyrite) leach into the cavities and pores of the fossil, which over time fully replaces the organic material.

Ammonites are an extinct sea creature, distantly related to the modern squid and octopus. They roamed the seas roughly 250 - 66 million years ago, evolving from elongated spine shelled creatures, to the wonderfully intriguing coiled explorers of the seas that they became before sadly being wiped out along with the dinosaurs!
