Turquoise is a copper and aluminium crystal that is found in very dry, barren regions around the world, including Iran, USA, Mexico and Cornwall. It is very frequently faked as real Turquoise is uncommon and pricey, most often with dyed Howlite and Magnesite. This popular crystal ranges in colour from greens through to bright blues, usually with brown veining. its name comes from the French 'pierre turquoise', or 'Turkish Stones', referring to the fact that the first Turquoise seen in Europe probably arrived from Turkey. Arizona produces one of the most famous and desirable Turquoises in the world, known as Sleeping Beauty Turquoise. It is a gorgeous bright blue colour, and is prized by jewellers as it has very few veins which are commonly found in Turquoise. Turquoise is the national gemstone of Tibet and it was also highly valued by the Egyptians and Chinese. It has been valued as a good luck stone by people from all over the world, and many believe it can predict danger by breaking, in a similar way to Malachite. It has also been used historically as a protection stone, and has been used as a horse amulet to protect these important animals by attaching them to the bridle. The Native Americans prized Turquoise and used it for jewellery and carvings, and the Apache tribe believed that attaching the gem to their bows made them more accurate, and believed Turquoise to be the gem found at the end of a rainbow. Other tribes believed Turquoise to be a stone of water, created when the tears of the creators fell to earth.
