Grandidierite is a very rare crystal named after Alfred Grandidier, a French explorer who catalogued a lot of the geography of Madagascar. It is quite a recent discovery, only named in 1902, and the blue colour comes from trace iron content, the more iron, the bluer the crystal. Faceted, gem Grandidierite is very rare, and can fetch up to $20,000 per carat.
