This beautifully preserved fossil leaf comes from the extinct species Metasequoia, commonly known as the Dawn Redwood. Although once thought to have disappeared millions of years ago, living Dawn Redwoods were famously rediscovered in China during the 1940s, making them one of the world's most remarkable "living fossils".
Fossil Metasequoia leaves are typically found preserved in fine sediment, allowing the delicate shape and vein patterns of the original leaf to be captured in impressive detail. These fossils provide an incredible glimpse into ancient forests that covered large parts of the Northern Hemisphere millions of years ago.
