This fossilised phalanx (toe bone) once belonged to Struthiomimus, a sleek, ostrich-like dinosaur that roamed the Late Cretaceous plains around 66 million years ago. With long legs, a lightweight build, and a toothless beak, Struthiomimus was built for speed - probably one of the faster dinosaurs of its time, and likely a bit of an opportunist when it came to food.
Discovered in the Hell Creek Formation, Montana, this bone is part of the intricate machinery that powered its swift, two-legged stride. It’s a compact but telling fossil, revealing just how finely tuned even a single toe could be in the anatomy of a dinosaur built for running.
