This ancient Ammonite fossil, specifically of the sub species Dactylioceras, is from the shores of Whitby, Yorkshire, UK. This particular fossil dates back roughly 180 million years, during the Jurassic period when dinosaurs roamed the earth! This piece has also been partially pyritized, giving it an extra cool factor. You will receive the exact Dactylioceras fossil as pictured.
Pyritization of fossils is relatively rare, as it occurs when Iron and Sulphur (the component elements of Pyrite) leach into the cavities and pores of the fossil, which over time fully replaces the organic material.
Ammonites are an extinct sea creature, distantly related to the modern squid and octopus. they roamed the seas roughly 250 - 66 million years ago, evolving from elongated spine shelled creatures, to the wonderfully intriguing coiled explorers of the seas that they became before sadly being wiped out along with the dinosaurs!
