Agate is characterised by its stripes, also known as banding. It is the name given to any banded Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz. The different names reference either the colour or locality where it is found, for example Blue Lace Agate has a certain light blue wavy banding, and Botswana Agate comes from Botswana.
The US produces several spectacular varieties of Agate. Although Agate does come in a huge variety of colours, the bright blue, pink, green and purple Agate slices and geodes are dyed to produce this artificial looking colour.
