Description

An ancient Fern fossil from Grundy County, Illinois, USA. You will receive the exact item as pictured.

Pecopteris is a type of fossil fern common in Carboniferous coal deposits, dating back around 300 million years -when vast swampy forests covered much of what’s now North America. These fossils represent the delicate, feather-like fronds of ancient seed ferns, preserved in fine detail in shale and siltstone.

Grundy County, Illinois is a classic locality for these plant fossils, with beautifully detailed impressions showing the leaflets (or pinnae) in crisp relief. While they look like modern ferns, Pecopteris belonged to an extinct group called the Pteridosperms, a mix of fern-like foliage and seed-producing features. In short: not your average houseplant, but definitely one with serious prehistoric credentials.
