This week we're taking a closer look at one of the most intriguing weapons in the fossil world... the tail club of Ankylosaurus.
This wasn't simply a heavy tail with a lump on the end. The end of the tail was reinforced by enlarged bones, while the vertebrae leading up to it became tightly interlocked with tendons, creating a surprisingly rigid handle. Together, they formed a powerful club that could be swung with considerable force.
Although it looks like a single solid lump of bone, the club was actually formed from several large bony plates called osteoderms, which fused around the end of the tail to create its distinctive shape.
Exactly what it was used for is still debated. It may have been an effective defence against predators such as Tyrannosaurus, but some palaeontologists also think Ankylosaurs used their clubs against each other, perhaps during contests over territory or mates, much like modern animals use antlers or horns.
It's a brilliant example of evolution finding a completely different solution to the problem of survival. Rather than relying on speed, sharp teeth or claws, Ankylosaurus transformed the end of its tail into a living mace.
Fun fact: Ankylosaurus wasn't born with a fully formed tail club. Like the horns of many modern animals, it developed as the dinosaur grew older.
