Description
This is a fossilized pine cone from Patagonia, Argentina, estimated to be around 160 million years old, dating back to the middle of the Jurassic period. During that time, intense volcanic eruptions blanketed the region in thick layers of ash. When this ash settled over forests of conifer trees, it helped create the perfect conditions for fossilization by cutting off oxygen and slowing down the natural decay process.
Over millions of years, the organic material in this pine cone was gradually replaced by minerals from the surrounding volcanic ash, turning it to stone - a process known as petrification.
This particular pine cone has been sliced across the middle, giving us a detailed cross-sectional view of its internal structure. You can see the intricate pattern of the cone’s scales and seeds, beautifully preserved through time.
You will receive the exact item in the photos.
